Who We Are
The George Gervin Youth Center is not just for youth; it is a resource for the entire community. From a pre-K through high school academic academy to retirement housing for those age 62 and older, there is something for everyone within our walls.
At GGYC, we recognize the need for a safe, friendly environment where children can receive a quality education as well as find extra-curricular and educational activities that keep them off the street. Likewise, it can be a challenge for retired community members to find affordable housing and volunteer opportunities close to home. We address both of these concerns with our varied programs that we offer to the community of San Antonio.
We invite you to read more about our programs below.
George Gervin Academy
The George Gervin Academy is located on three campuses throughout central San Antonio and serves about 1,100 pre-kindergarten through 12th grade students. It strives to provide educational alternatives and a variety of pathways for at-risk students.
A licensed Foster Family Home, the Basic Center provides services to homeless and/or runaway pregnant teens, ages 13 to 17 years old.
Non-traditional students will find success at the Technology Center, an accelerated high school for students in tenth grade and above.
Newell Retirement Plaza
An affordable housing option for seniors ages 62 and older, the Newell Retirement Plaza provides volunteer opportunities and a variety of other on-site services.
In our YouthBuild program, teens and young adults develop their leadership abilities while teaching participants about construction skills as they prepare for postsecondary education.
George “Iceman” Gervin is a former San Antonio Spurs player and a member of the NBA Hall of Fame. He was the first guard to ever win three consecutive titles. Nicknamed “Iceman” for his cool demeanor on the court, Gervin was primarily known for his scoring talents leading the NBA in scoring average three years in a row from 1978 to 1980 with a fourth scoring title in 1982. He now gives back to the community that supported him in his professional basketball endeavors by providing multiple programs that target today’s youth by assisting their educational needs.
